Technology Reflection: Instructional Use of ‘SMART' boards

Description/Experience:
During seminar, a teacher from Kingwood Elementary School came in to discuss the uses of the ‘SMART’ board. The smart board is an electronic and interactive giant board that is used in the classroom as a replacement for a blackboard. On a smartboard, one may write, draw, and all in and all conduct and lesson possible that would be used on a regular board. On top of that, multiple games, videos, presentations and other modes of media may be expressed on the smartboard.
Using a website demonstrated by the teacher called ‘Portaportal’ teachers may access this and download multiple games that allow for instructional lessons to be utilized by teachers and students. Teachers can share ideas for games and download them for free.
Application:
My classroom is a first grade classroom. Luckily there are tons of games available that can pertain to young elementary school students. For an application, the learners may be learning more sciences. Specifically- the water cycle. Using an interactive lesson on the smartboard, students can learn the cycle of weather, the water cycle and terms: evaporation, condensation, etc. A game would exist in which students could drag the correct step and picture of the water cycle, plug it into the correct position, and once complete, the media would come to life as the pictures moved and displayed the water cycle.
Learners:
The learners would be in 1st grade.
Learning Outcomes:
To be able to understand and comprehend the cycle of water and the process of it that helps nature revolve and be successful.
Assessment
To conduct an assessment, each student would help create the water cycle on the whiteboard. Each student would come and drag the correct step of the water cycle and explain the what that step means.

Reflection

Pedagogy-Content:
The drill and practice of going over the steps of the water cycle would help the students gain a deeper understanding of the how the world works and the basics of life. It may be a building block to all future science classes.
Technology-Pedagogy:
Teaching the water cycle via the SMART board will help effectively teach the students the water cycle. Utilizing a technology that students are engaged in and actively participating in will motivate them to learn the content via technology.
Technology-Content:
Using the interactive SMART board, the students will be able to use the technology the board offers and put their technological knowledge to use by demonstrating to the teacher their knowledge of the content. They will undergo the activity using the SMART board and that technology aspect can be a great benefit.
Technology-Pedagogy-Content:
Teaching any lesson via the SMART board is an overall very effective lesson. It keeps the students engaged and excited. When they get to use themselves to be apart of the activity and not just listen to direct instruction the entire time, they can gain a deeper understanding of the content, as well as more experience with a new innovative technology.
